About Thiru Publications

Thiru Publications is an independent venture dedicated to showcasing the vibrant literature of South India. We aim to introduce remarkable literary voices from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam to English-speaking audiences and other European languages.

South India's rich cultural tapestry and literary heritage are often overlooked. Many of the books that have reached the Western audience cater solely to their preferences, often reflecting simplified political and social views. However, the true essence of South Indian aesthetics and perspectives is far more nuanced and flavorful. Our mission is to bridge this gap through translations that faithfully convey the depth of local traditions, philosophies, and stories. For the attentive reader, this exploration promises a journey into authentic literature, offering a reward that is both profound and enriching.

The cover picture shows the Yoga Sarasvati of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, built by Emperor Rajendra Chola (11th century CE). The image depicts the goddess of wisdom sitting in a yoga position, which is very rare in India. Yoga and wisdom (Gnana) are entirely different paths according to Hindu and Buddhist doctrines; this ancient statue shows those two paths as one.

The goddess is holding a 'chain of eyes' (Aksha Mala) for meditation in one hand and a vessel of amrith (the nectar of immortality) in the other. On one lower hand she is holding a book, and with her other hand she is showing Eka mudra, which indicates everything is one.

The foot icon, which is our emblem, shows the divine foot of Lakshmi, the goddess representing all forms of prosperity.

The cover was designed by Shanmugavel and Lalitha Ragavan.
